The Leith New Music # 5 proudly returns with BARE, and YOU!
We are showcasing new works written for four instruments - Trumpet, Clarinet, Violin or Viola, and Cello by emerging artists. The composers are invited to write pieces that include theatrical instructions. The world premieres are performed by BARE - Bede Williams, Alex South, Emma Lloyd, and Robin Mason.
The night's main drag is a very special and rare performance of Cornelius Cardew's open graphical score TREATISE. We warmly invite YOU!, the audience, to join BARE and LNM Ensemble to play this graphical score, which will be projected on the screen on the night. It's a free open score, so anyone is welcome to rock up with ANY instrument and join us for a run-through at 6pm, and a perform with us at 9pm. It will probably be wild and fun! If you want to join us, do let us know in advance by email begbiexenakis@gmail.com by Friday 8 November. If you want to se an example performance of the piece see here. Miind you, we probably will sound nothing like it!

Of course, you are most welcomed not to play too. Go and treat yourself to a live surround sound of the very best experimental music experience Leith has to offer!
Treatise is joined by dancers - Alma Sua, Sky Su, Pamela Szykula, and Brian Hartley,
What's more, BARE will serenade us to a free improvisation set to mark the new unforeseen world we face in post-halloween, post-world-leader election Autumn. Chill or bare, we will respond by continuing to make the best music and have the best time.
The night concludes with a set by local DJ tbc.
Suggested donation £10 / pay what you can - no one is turned away for lack of funds
Call for Scores is NOW OPEN! The instruments for Night #5 are for four players of BARE - Bede Williams, Alex South, Robin Mason, and Emma Lloyd.
Trumpet (C or Bb)
Clarinet (Bb or Bass)
Violin OR Viola
and cello.
Deadline for submission is Friday 1 November.
The submitted score must be -
include theatrical instructions! These are usually things composers ask performers to physically do e.g. shout out loud a random number, jump up and down, copy a gesture of someone sitting next to you, go to a bar and buy everyone on stage a pint, etc etc etc...
Historically some composers intended these to be strictly followed, while many others just had a lot of fun.
If you want assistance or more clarity, write to us in the first instance at begbiexenakis@gmail.com.
max 10 mins long (miniatures are encouraged!)
a score written for a combination of instrumentation unique to the night
submit online in PDF with complete score and parts - from link below or email
graphic scores are welcome!
We tend to select music that -
presents unique, exciting ideas and approach to new music
fits satisfying and varying selection of repertoire for the evening
the duration and complexity of music is suited to the resident ensemble and the rehearsal time available
has never been performed before
We might not be able to perform all the scores submitted, and there is limited rehearsal/workshop time per piece. So please be realistic about difficulty and feasibility!
The composers of selected works must attend the workshop/rehearsal. This will take place at the performance venue Leith Depot, usually 2 hours before the door opening time on the performance day, but on occasionally if the pieces are challenging we will meet a few days in advance for a longer session.
If we are unable to include your piece at an event please do not consider it to be a comment on the quality of the work, and please do consider submitting either the same or a different piece for future occasions. We acknowledge how much effort goes into writing a score and we will happily provide feedback upon request. We are committed to transparency, and keen to meet you regardless of your musical backgrounds.
Any questions, write to us at begbiexenakis@gmail.com. We will do our best to get back to you as quickly as we can.

BARE consists of Bede Williams (trumpets), Alex South (clarinets, electronics), Robin Mason (cello), and Emma Lloyd (violin, electronics). Individually we are involved in an eclectic mix of disciplines: contemporary classical, orchestral and chamber music, conducting, baroque violin, free jazz, music/dance improvisation, and multispecies musicking. Together, we focus our performances on an open dynamics of uncertainty, exploring performer freedoms and constraints in an improvised framework.
