The Leith New Music # 4 proudly returns with an extraordinary blend of new music with a lot of twists!
We are showcasing new works written for trumpet, violin, viola, and cello by emerging artists. The composers are invited to write pieces that are inspired by chart-hitting pop songs of their choice - from any genre, any era. The caveat is that the arrangement must show no trace of the original, so that we remain a law abiding citizens who respect copyright. The world premieres are performed by Robert Henderson, Emma Lloyd, Chris Lyons and Atzi Muramatsu.
The night's main drag is a very special and rare performance of late Dutch composer Louis Andriessen's infamous open score Worker's Union, joined by the ensemble musicians and YOU! The audience are warmly welcomed to rock up with any instrument and join us for a run-through at 6.00pm, and a perform with us at 8.45pm. It will probably be wild and fun to say the least. If you want to join us, do let us know in advance by email begbiexenakis@gmail.com by Friday 26 July. The piece is non-pitched and frankly anything goes, but you might want to practise your rhythm reading before hand. See a performance example of the piece -

Of course, you are most welcomed not to play too. Go and treat yourself to a live surround sound of the very best experimental music experience Leith has to offer!
What's more, Emma, John and Chris will serenade us to a short voice and piano performance of four songs originally written by the Beatles, but made fully accessible for musical outcasts by Louis Andriessen.
The night concludes with an experimental electronic music set by Jess Aslan (aka xica), an Edinburgh-London based synth and code mage researcher composer.

We tend to select music that -
presents unique, exciting ideas and approach to new music
fits satisfying and varying selection of repertoire for the evening
the duration and complexity of music is suited to the resident ensemble and the rehearsal time available
has never been performed before
We might not be able to perform all the scores submitted, and there is limited rehearsal/workshop time per piece. So please be realistic about difficulty and feasibility!
The composers of selected works must attend the workshop/rehearsal. This will take place at the performance venue Leith Depot, usually 2 hours before the door opening time on the performance day, but on occasionally if the pieces are challenging we will meet a few days in advance for a longer session.
If we are unable to include your piece at an event please do not consider it to be a comment on the quality of the work, and please do consider submitting either the same or a different piece for future occasions. We acknowledge how much effort goes into writing a score and we will happily provide feedback upon request. We are committed to transparency, and keen to meet you regardless of your musical backgrounds.
Any questions, write to us at begbiexenakis@gmail.com. We will do our best to get back to you as quickly as we can.

Emma is an international performer, improviser, composer, and artist. She performs as a soloist and in small ensembles, working often with live electronics, and collaborating regularly with composers. In addition to the modern set-up, she plays a baroque violin and performs both baroque and contemporary music written specifically for this instrument.
As an improviser, Emma's performance tends to be quiet and intimate in nature, exploring the innate timbral qualities of the violin, and discovering some of the often hidden sounds that can be found with her unique combination of technique and tools.
Composer/pianist/many-instrumentalist. On different days he can be found performing impossible electric guitar scores, running enormous Balkan brass bands or teaching people how to improvise fugues.
